A Gem in Elmsford: Artist Sharai Platt

I had the pleasure of speaking with Sharai Platt (pronounced Shari) of Elmsford, New York on the phone a few months ago, and immediately thought; "now there's a dog person!" She is an artist and owner of a business called "Pets on Plates." She draws portraits of dogs, cats and other animals on plates, fires them and produces beautiful artwork and gifts for people. Since I consider myself new to the "business" of dogs, I found a compatriot in Sharai and was happy to offer some suggestions and help point her in the right direction. As so often happens in life, giving to someone can bring good thinks back in triple-fold. When Sharai agreed to design the logos for Dog Trainers' Connection and my own personal training website, I felt like I had hit the jackpot!

Sharai grew up in Connecticut and studied painting and illustrating at Syracuse University. Shortly after attending college, she freelanced for a ceramic studio in Connecticut and learned how to paint on tile and various ceramic surfaces. Many of her projects such as painted tiles, murals and backsplashes can be seen in local restaurants. It was while working on these projects that Sharai honed the involved and exacting craft of ceramic painting which involves sanding the clay surface, painting the portrait, glazing the plate and firing it in a kiln.

She went on to form her own company called Pets on Plates, which merges the two things that she loves... painting and animals. Her beautiful renderings of animals have given pet owners much pleasure. You can see her work and find out how to contact Sharai at www.petsonplates.com.

Sharai also works as a graphic artist, is married and lives in Elmsford, New York. She doesn't have a dog at the moment, but is hoping to have a Brussels Griffon one day as it is her favorite breed of dog. Thank you Sharai for designing a wonderful logo for Dog Trainers' Connection!
